Either works as this top is designed to sit flat and smooth regardless of which direction you go.

How easy is it to wash? Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Hang or lay flat to dry. No tumble dryer, no iron. A mesh laundry bag will extend the life of the fabric significantly.
